In July, I’m volunteering with other students from my year to help with the Bishop Justus Vocational Centre building project in the Diocese of Kondoa, Tanzania.
The Bishop Justus Vocational Centre seeks to equip young people in the Diocese to learn a trade and develop skills that will generate an income. Despite the Tanzanian Government's determination to send all young people to school, the majority finish their education after primary school, and therefore are unable to contribute to their family or village communities.
"The best thing the Diocese can do for our young people, many of them poor, some orphans, is to offer them skills for life". - Bishop Given Gaula
The project involves new buildings and the use of existing Diocesan buildings in the newly designated District of Chemba. These will provide workshops, teaching areas and dormitories for students. Teaching and training will be provided in carpentry, mechanics, plumbing, building and electrical work, sewing, cooking and agriculture.
We will take part in a one-day hike of Kilimanjaro, then travel to Kondoa where we will be helping with the building works of the vocational centre and spending time with the village children, teaching, reading, drawing and other activities.
The total cost to fund my trip will be around £2,000 and I'm hoping to raise as much of this money as possible through online donations and hosting fundraising events.
The project is twinned with my school and I am very excited about being part of such a worthwhile project and continuing the school’s link with the Diocese of Kondoa.
I am so grateful for any donations and support you can offer. It will mean so much to me and the children of Chemba.
