JABS x Equal Justice Initiative

Tax deductible
Dear Jabbers,

JABS is, and always has been, a community of action.

Being a part of this community means you are willing to get uncomfortable in the pursuit of becoming a better individual. In recognition of the marginalization and mass violence against people of color across the world, specifically, the recent senseless murders of Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, George Floyd, and Tony McDade, we took a moment to pause.

Our goal is two-fold: rally jabbers to donate to an impactful organization while listening and amplifying the voices of the Black community by sharing important resources. We believe that when the social media posts stop and the media moves on to cover the next thing, we have a responsibility to continue this conversation as a community. We aren’t going to be a team that only takes action when it’s convenient.

We’ve launched a GoFundMe to raise money for the Equal Justice Initiative, founded by Bryan Stevenson. EJI works to end mass incarceration, excessive punishment and racial inequality. One of our instructors and several jabbers have had the honor of hearing Mr. Stevenson speak about racial inequality and have been moved by his mission. His book, Just Mercy, tells the powerful stories of the individuals EJI represents, as well as highlights the importance of confronting injustice, and it was recently made into a film. Please consider donating to this organization as a first step towards taking action.

Additionally, we’ve aggregated a list of books and resources that can help educate jabbers and jumpstart our involvement in our own communities. But rather than just sharing a bunch of links that WE find helpful, we ask that this be an open dialogue - if you have helpful resources that you want to share with the JABS community, please email them to [email redacted] and we will work to get them live.

At JABS, we have always sought to be a community that loves and embraces every jabber who walks into the room (Zoom or IRL), whether it’s your first time or 200th time. JABS is a safe haven for many - we don’t always know what you are carrying with you when you show up to class, but we are committed to being on your team. We recognize that fitness spaces tend to be places of sizable privilege, specifically, we recognize that this privilege has a distinct look to it. As a community and as leadership, we want you to know we are more than just words and a group who says we’ll take action. We’re committed to ensuring that everyone feels seen, heard, and supported.

Thank you for your patience as we gathered our thoughts together during this difficult moment. We look forward to continuing this conversation both online and in person with you all.

Sincerely, Team JABS
