Mt Kilimanjaro - The Roof of Africa!

Join me on my adventure to summit the tallest freestanding mountain in the world, but more importantly to make a difference for families struggling with chronic health issues and poverty.

In June, I am excited to embark on a mission trip to Tanzania with my good friend Pastor Chad Brekke from the Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Minnesota.  While there and on June 30th, my 52nd birthday, I also plan to summit Mt. Kilimanjaro!  Originally, the plan was to do it "just because" - after all, I do like to climb things!   However, I realized I have an opportunity here.  So, for me climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro has become about making a difference and helping those in need - with your support.   The mountain has been called the "Roof of Africa."  And by climbing it,  I am looking to help families in Tanzania who are struggling with chronic illness and poverty and give them a real home ...and a  "roof" over their head.

The program I have chosen to support is Houses For Health  (http://www.housesforhealth.org).  This organization helps familes where the parent(s) or adult caretaker(s) are dealing with a chronic illness and poverty and, who are presently living in very substandard conditions.  Often this is just a mud or stick structure.  Take a moment to think about that!  My goal is to change this for at least one family and to build them a home.  Through Houses For Health, WE can build this family a real home for just $3,000.  This program uses only local Tanzania labor and 100% of what I raise will go to Houses For Health.  I hope to be able to meet the family while I am there in June and, once the work is finished, share a photo of the family in front of their newly finished home - that WE helped to build.

I am truly honored to share that The Helen J. Serini Foundation has already agreed to support my initiative by matching up to $5,000 of any donation you make to Houses for Health. Thank you!!

A little about me.  In 1997, I chose to enter the healthcare field with two graduate programs at the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health and was truly inspired by those I met and my new path.  As my career progressed, I was very fortunate to have some amazing opportunities to unleash my passion to make a difference in the lives of people living with chronic illnesses.  Many memories and amazing colleagues from this time, but one thing I will NEVER forget was actually visiting homes and repeatedly seeing first hand the devastating impact that chronic illness and poverty can have on a person … and, a family.  This June, I have chosen to build on this passion and to once again try and  do my part to make a difference.

Every journey begins with a single step and I am asking for your support of my climb to the Roof of Africa.  My starting goal is to raise $3,000 to build a home for one family in need in Tanzania.  Truthfully, I’d like to help 10 families .... so, doing some math, let’s see... yep, that’s $30,000.....it's right, I checked :).   Yeah, I am thinking BIG!  But, hey, it’s a BIG mountain and there is a HUGE need to help people ... so, WHY NOT!

Join me!
My climb will take a week and I expect that the last night making the final ascent up to 19,341 feet, which will start around midnight and last about 14 hours, will be the most challenging.  That night, I want to be thinking about your support and generosity and the fact that together we are helping to make a difference for a family (or two or ten!) that need a hand - BECAUSE WE CAN!!

In memory of my father, Dr. Allan J. D. Dale (2011); my mother, Arlene I. E. Dale (1983); and my step-mom Dorothy Ann Dale (2015).  Will have each of you in my heart as I take on this mountain and the program that I have selected to support in order to make a difference.  Thank you for the inspiration!
