Hi, we’re Teddy and Hannah, and we set up Better Spaces to support families experiencing housing poverty or instability. We’re a small Brighton & Hove project using design, donated products and practical help to turn tired or poorly equipped living conditions into nurturing spaces where families can feel settled and children can thrive. We believe that when life is difficult, having a safe, calm and functional place to call home really matters.

For our first project, we’re supporting a young family with a one year old baby who have been through a period of significant upheaval and are now living in temporary accommodation. Like many families in this situation, they arrived with very little and don’t have the resources to make the flat work properly as a home. There are no blinds at any of the windows, no dining table, very little storage, and the kitchen is falling apart. Although the accommodation is described as “temporary”, the reality is that they may be living there for many years. We want to help them create a comfortable, nurturing space that feels like home.

Over two days, our team volunteers will:

• clear, clean and reorganise the kitchen, adding storage and shelving to make it practical and safe

• create a comfortable living space where the family can eat, relax and spend time together

• give their little one a calm, organised bedroom

• add the practical things that make a space feel homely, private and practical

We’re raising £1,000 towards the furniture, storage, window coverings, fittings and skilled trade support needed to make it happen.

Our design and project time is being given completely free of charge, so the money we raise goes directly towards making the family’s spaces better. If we’re fortunate enough to raise more than we need for this makeover, every extra pound will go towards helping the next family.

We’ll share updates and, with the family’s permission, anonymous before-and-after photos so you can see what your support has made possible.
