Hello everyone. Our friend Ryan Coady was recently the victim of a construction company scam. We really feel terrible as he is just a great guy with a big heart who was taken advantage of! Now his savings are gone and he needs a lawyer!
He hired a contractor (who claimed to be a red sealed carpenter) to do the work of turning his basement into a one bedroom apartment. The contractor asked for money up front to cover the cost of materials, etc. Ryan used his entire savings plus took out a loan to pay this person $50,000. Checking in a few times, there seemed to be some issues with the work, which Ryan questioned, but the contractor always seemed to have an answer that made sense at the time. Flash forward to three weeks later and this person said he needed even more money. The work was not finished but it was absolutely horrendous! This is some of the worst work we've ever seen. The walls aren't straight, the seams aren't lined up, there are huge gaps everywhere, the doorway is not level and is uneven , the rows of pocket lights are all off centre, there doesn't appear to be any noise cancelling materials put into the ceiling, there are issues around the windows, the drywall mud is just packed on in globs, in other spots it is sanded too far, things are neither plumb nor square, the entire job is just an awful mess.
Ryan fired him and started to look over invoices, etc. There were double charges, charges for supplies not actually used, charges for more supplies than would actually be required for the square footage, and there is some uncertainty of this person having red seal certification. We are not naming the business or person here due to the possibility of litigation.
Now, Ryan has to hire a lawyer to figure out how he can fight the contract. The work is mostly unsalvageable, it will have to be completely redone!
We would love to raise enough money to help Ryan pay a lawyer and hire a new contractor who would be willing to fix this! Every little bit will help us reach this goal for a great friend. Although we realize the goal of $50,000 is unlikely to be reached, we know that Ryan will be extremely grateful for any amount of help. Thank you everyone!
