Help Maternity Hospital, Galle, Sri Lanka

We are (Thusitha Gamage and Shiroma Epa), Sri Lankan´s living in Sydney, Australia. We were both born and brought up in Galle, Sri Lanka till we migrated to Australia as grownups.

 

Sri Lankan Economic Crisis

As many of you are aware, Sri Lanka is facing a severe economic crisis. The impact is felt everywhere in the country. Empty shelves in grocery stores, overnight stays in fuel queues, no gas to cook meals, power cuts for hours, and school closures. The cost of living has increased drastically, that more and more people cannot afford to buy or access essential items and services. The country is running out of essential medical supplies.

 

Teaching Hospital Mahamodara

Teaching Hospital Mahamodara is also experiencing challenges in ensuring the continuation of its uninterrupted medical treatments. Hospital has cancelled many surgeries due to a lack of medical supplies. Teaching Hospital Mahamodara is the main tertiary health care provider in the Southern Province of Sri Lanka, providing antenatal, postnatal & newborn care. The hospital also serves parts of adjacent districts of Western & Sabaragamuwa Provinces. Therefore, the impact of the current situation in the hospital is not isolated to Southern Province.

 

This hospital faced challenges in its history. It was affected by Tsunami in 2004, we still remember the stories of heroic staff who risk their lives to save newborn and mothers from the big waves. Now it´s facing another challenge.
