WHO I AM
My name is Jamie Choi, a long-time Tongva/Chumash land resident, and I’m writing on behalf of a dear friend of mine, Bunnie (they/them), the beneficiary of this fundraiser.
Bunnie is a friend who has consistently done whatever they can for others in their times of need—whether that is a listening ear or really sound advice, doing their best to organize virtual community spaces for others, or boosting and donating to mutual aid efforts, they have always been a rock in their circles of friends, including myself. Now, I feel that it is time to give back to them during their time of need, and I am reaching out to the community at large for care and support.
WHY
- Long-term unemployment, chronic illnesses, and medical emergencies 2021-2024 that have left Bunnie drained financially and completely burnt out.
- A personal history fraught with abuse, stalking, and harassment. A fractured social life. Bunnie has had to go no contact with many people over the years, limiting reach, opportunities, and support.
- A barely surviving family. Bunnie and their family’s funds that could have gone toward housing and food are now being divided up further to cover unexpected expenses. Bunnie’s family has been struggling for a very long time to cover basic survival expenses.
- Bunnie cares for two young disabled, chronically ill cats who have been in need of food, water, supplements, medication, and a stable living environment.
- Justice and basic human dignity. Bunnie should not have to resort to starving and ignoring treatable health issues just to keep barely surviving in constant pain while more issues keep developing due to the effects of trauma on their body.
WHAT
Bunnie desperately needs urgent ongoing help covering:
- Rent ($2840/mo).
- Critical dental insurance to avoid more out-of-pocket specialist bills for ongoing problems ($60/mo).
- Therapy for trauma ($40/weekly session).
- Pet health insurance ($110/month).
- Cat meds ($620+ per year).
- Cat supplements necessary for immune system support ($28/mo).
- Cat food ($220+/mo).
- Cat litter suitable for asthma ($160/mo).
- Utilities, gas, groceries for 4 adults ($2000/mo).
- Bonus: necessary healthcare procedures (annual checkup, labwork), acupuncture for trauma, medication, transportation to/from - costs uncertain until receipts obtained.
Bunnie needs relief from their present, ongoing circumstances of hardship as outlined above, and their mutual aid requests in the past did not gain much reach. The goal of this fundraiser is high to try and support Bunnie for three months, but even $1 counts.
IMPACT / OTHER WAYS TO HELP
As a friend, my biggest hope is that the funding will help them feel supported by the community at large and genuinely gives them the well-deserved respite needed to recover from always being in high-anxiety survival mode alone.
