Help 2 needy families affected by Covid-19
Donation protected
Greetings all,
This is Promee and Firdous Kamal (see picture above). We are a couple from Illinois, asking your help for two families in New York who are in dire need of financial assistance. They were impacted by the Coronavirus crisis, of which New York has been the recent epicenter. Due to the lockdown, many immigrant and poor families have lost their jobs, unable to make ends meet. They depend on daily/weekly wages, working jobs that do not provide any unemployment or health benefits. They do not have a rainy day fund and often live month to month or even week to week. These are our hard working civic neighbors who serve us by doing the essential foundational services such as food prep, cleaning, delivery, driving, lawn work and so much more. If we can help support them through just a few difficult months, I am sure they will rebound and continue those services. Without this small but critical timely support, they will be forced to years of hardship or even homelessness. We cannot help everyone, but we can help a few. And we know that if we all take that approach, thousands if not millions of our fellow citizens can be carried through these few difficult months so they can resume their service for the rest of us. Please help in this fundraising and support any other avenues of help you can during these difficult times. We sincerely appreciate your support, especially for those that are not saved by the safety net of the system.
Here are their short stories:
Family 1: 43 years old female who lives with her sister and her sister’s two children in Jamaica, Queens. She had already been looking for a job for a month when the city shut down businesses to stem the spread of the coronavirus so, she is ineligible for unemployment benefits. Her sister worked in a restaurant but has been unemployed since the shutdown. Living paycheck to paycheck her housing insecurity was amplified once her sister got laid off. Her sister has been waiting for 4 weeks to receive unemployment but her application remains pending like thousands of people. She is four months behind on electricity, internet, and phone bill. For the month of April, she was unable to pay her monthly rent of $1,042 along with her past dues balance. She reached out to a friend to borrow money from her neighbor to pay for food. The neighbor, also in a tight position, offered to pay her food with a credit card with the understanding that she would pay the balance soon. She is not eligible for the Stimulus package from the Federal Government with no rainy day fun to pay her neighbor back. The two sisters live in tremendous anxiety everyday trying to put a room over them and feed their children. They simply don't know how they will survive this crisis.
Family 2: A Middle aged husband and wife live with their son in Astoria, Queens. They were working at Subway until they were laid off due to the lockdown. Their son is currently attending LaGuardia community college in Queens, NY. Their monthly rent is $1500. They have no income right now and no savings to live on. They are not eligible for the Stimulus package from the Federal Government nor unemployment benefits. They are starting to fall behind on rent and other bills.
We are starting this fundraiser with $250.00. Please donate as much as you can.
