Let me start off by introducing myself! My name is Samina Lakhani, and I am grateful to have two passions that motivate me to do all of the work that I do,
- Teaching and Learning
- Helping those in need achieve their full potential
It's incredible to think that I've been in education for 16 years! I've spent 14 of those years in the classroom and the other 2 coaching teachers. I am honored to have had the opportunity to work with an organization that provides continuing education for adults who experience poverty in addition to my role as an educator. As an Education Program Manager, I have had the chance to collaborate with diverse specialists across the country to create and execute innovative learning programs, such as English and GED courses. The curriculum and programs are tailored to meet the unique needs of vulnerable adults and equip them with the knowledge and skills to pursue higher-paying opportunities. My life's work is to support families so they can improve the lives of coming generations.
In 2015, I had the amazing opportunity to travel to Central Asia due to this work. Over the course of a few summers, I had the privilege of working with high school students from 3 Central Asian countries to enhance their English language skills. This undoubtedly boosted their chances of enrolling and being accepted into a high-esteemed university/college, bringing them one step closer to pursuing their dreams! Every single one of the students who completed the program saw growth in their language and literacy skills. Additionally, many of them successfully enrolled in English-speaking postsecondary institutions and secured jobs requiring proficient knowledge of the English language.
I had the opportunity to spend a few summers in the town of Khorog, Tajikistan, where I trained over 200 volunteer teachers on the best instructional practices for teaching adult English learners. Our focus was classroom management, reading and writing strategies, and lesson planning. This group has successfully served over 3,000 adult students! Many people were able to improve their career prospects and earn a decent income. It's astounding to witness how these individuals who were once financially struggling have enhanced their skills and secured employment that allows them to support their families while maintaining their self-worth and dignity.
All of my experiences working with marginalized communities in Central Asia and the US have prepared me for my next adventure. This summer, I have the opportunity to travel to a town outside of Kampala, Uganda, to further pursue my passion for guiding individuals to develop skills and find gainful employment while maintaining their dignity and providing for their families.
In the 90s, Uganda experienced a challenging time as Joseph Kony led the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) in an uprising that resulted in a civil war. Over 100,000 Ugandans had been killed by Kony's soldiers, and at least 60,000 children had been abducted. This gang committed numerous crimes against children, including teaching them to be killers, raping young girls, and kidnapping them for use as sex slaves. In 2009, the threat from Kony and his rebels finally ended. The town of Gulu and its families continue to focus on healing and rebuilding for the future.
I cannot wait to travel to Gulu this June and collaborate with St. Monica's Tailoring School to develop their English literacy skills in their vocational education programs (tailoring, culinary, cosmetology). The new curriculum will provide an excellent opportunity for the young women attending the school to enhance their English literacy skills and further excel as community leaders. Also, I am eager to work with the students and help them develop their social and emotional skills. Together, we will focus on expanding their thinking, building self-confidence, and empowering them to succeed.
