Great Barrier Reef Conservation trip
I am volunteering with International Volunteer Headquarters (IVHQ). The organization has enabled 112,307 volunteers since 2007 to go to more than 50 locations around the world to deliver long-term impact to communities that value the support of those who are able and inclined to volunteer.
Volunteering sparked my interest in this area amidst the tragic wild fires that were burning out of control and devastating habitats for all of the animals in the fire's path. There is a real need for people to assist with animal rehabilitation, fostering and replacing the animals that were displaced by the fire, but they needed specialized volunteers for that effort. I began to think of some of the residual affects of the fires and found that there is an ongoing need for people to assist with conservation of the Great Barrier Reef.
I will be volunteering in collaboration with a number of oceanographic organizations to gather data and support the protection of the Great Barrier Reef through a range of initiatives, including:
Reef Monitoring - Where I’ll be snorkeling to observe and collect data on the species living around the Great Barrier Reef. I will be receiving training for in-water surveying techniques during program orientation. This will be the first two weeks of the trip.
Marine Debris Collection and Research - Marine debris represents a significant threat to the Great Barrier Reef ecosystem and is having a devastating impact on marine life. As a volunteer, I’ll be assisting with marine debris data collection and mapping. This data will then be categorized and shared with conservationists to assist with their research. I’ll be shown how to undertake marine debris data collection during orientation.
Sea Turtle Rehabilitation - To support sea turtle conservation efforts, I will be trained to care for sick and injured sea turtles, giving me the chance to gain an in-depth understanding of each turtle’s specific case and rehabilitation requirements. I'll be able help prepare food, feed the turtles and clean the facilities, filters and tanks.
My goal as a volunteer on this trip is to learn more about the great barrier reef, experience the Australian culture and make a small but positive impact on one of the more remarkable marine ecosystems in the world, that is sadly suffering from the effects of climate change.
My entire adult life, I have spent in volunteer service to our country as a US Marine and upon completion of my 20 years as a Marine, I will be transitioning into an entire new way of life and would love to start it out volunteering on this trip. Your contribution to my campaign will help!!
Thank you for your interest in helping me!
