My ultimate career goal is to work internationally as an epidemiologist and an advocate for those who are underrepresented or impoverished. The Dominican Republic has one of the highest disparities in income distribution in the Western Hemisphere. This results in many public health challenges which disproportionately affect the poor and this poverty often shows its most harmful effects in the health of women and children. The result of this in the Dominican Republic can bee seen in the unwavering maternal mortality rate despite increases in health care access and prenatal care. This suggests a weakness is present in the quality and delivery of care to women during the perinatal period. My particular interests are in nutrition and education programs for this population because I believe this will show positive changes in the quality of health for pregnancies, infants, children and mothers. Because of this interest I particularly look forward to working with and learning from groups like FUNDEBMUNI, MUDHA and the Three Mariposas Montessori, who's focus is on empowering, educating and improving health of women and children in their communities. I believe in their mission in working to provide comprehensive education to low income population as a means to address inequality in the Dominican Republic.
In the future I hope that I can guide and develop programs in other countries like the ones we plan to visit in the Dominican Republic so that women and children can become less afflicted by poverty and have the chance of a healthy life. Programs like these help impoverished populations not only establish better lifelong health but also provides them social protection.
