To mount a social media campaign to defend the legacy of Christopher Columbus and what he means to Italian-Americans.
MISSION STATEMENT OF “CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS ASSOCIATION”
Columbus Day is celebrated in many of the countries in the Americas for the anniversary of his arrival to the New World on October 12, 1492. He originally set out to sail for India under King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain. He made a total of four voyages between 1492 and 1498 where he explored Caribbean islands and areas of Central and South America.
He is a symbol of Italians all over the world . Moreover , he is the pride of every Italo-American and an important part of our history. We, the millions of Italo-Americans are proud of what he stands for and what he accomplished . For us, he is a “ HERO” a navigator / explorer from the at that time a thriving seaport city of Genoa, Italy, that now celebrates his birth .
We must look beyond his voyages, his life, his love of the “ New “ world for we Italian-Americans it gave us the courage to leave our mother land , our families and come to an unknown world and provide a future for our families. Now, hundreds of years later sons and daughters of Columbus have become essential in the daily fabric of the United States of America . Our culture has influenced the life of Americans from our culture, our music , our food ,our religion, our government and most of all our people . We have become lawyers, judges, politicians, businessmen , community leaders, teachers, artist , professors and homemakers . All Americans owe a debt of gratitude to the over 1.5 million Italian-Americans who served in our Armed Forces during WWII . We have acclimated to the American way of life and our parents and grandparents have taught us to take pride of being Italian but always remember we are AMERICAN .
For we Italian-Americans , Columbus is and will always be the person who was the ‘first immigrant “ and foresaw the immigration of millions of Italians . Visitors to Ellis Island have the opportunity to witness our Italian ancestors who came here seeking a better life due to “ONE MAN” who gave them the courage to come to this GREAT NATION .
Our Italo-American societies are very much involved in responding and refuting the attacks and acts of criminal vandalism of Columbus Statues here in New York. We must challenge the attempts to remove his likeness and essentially vacate his memory based on false allegations . Essentially, the Italian federation and our Italian-American colleagues have lead the way in highlighting the notable accomplishments of Columbus as an Italian explorer, navigator and deeply religious personage. There is no question that Columbus day is celebrated as a day to honor Italian heritage.
We ask all within our Italian-American community to stand with us and be proud of our heritage , our culture, our religion and yes Cristopher
Columbus .We also request our American colleagues to join with us in preserving our American way of life. We must stand together and fight for our heritage ,our families, our way of life, our future and our great country the United States of America.
