Nakivale Refugees Cry Out for Food

"Refugees in Nakivale resettlement camp in Isingiro district are in dire need for of food. They say the 1.5 kg of maize given to each of them is not enough to sustain them for a month. Officials from the United Nations High Commission for refugees and the Prime Minister’s office say there is a food crisis across the whole world, leaving them no choice but to ration supplies." “How can I give back to the place where I lived and many still lose their lives because they can’t afford a meal?” This thought has never left Faziri Ndahiro’s mind since 2014. When, at age 15, he and his family of 8 moved to the Nakivale Refugee Settlement in Uganda. They had been forced from their home in Congo due to internal tribal unrest. Faziri and his family joined over 60,000 other refugees from Congo, Sudan, Ethiopia, Somalia and Rwanda. These refugees, despite escaping danger in their home countries, still found themselves in dire straits, struggling for survival on a daily basis. In the midst of his family’s own difficulties in Nakivale, the young Faziri was still moved to compassion for those around him who didn’t have the support of a family - single mothers, widows and orphans. His daily interactions with these vulnerable people ignited a passion within him as he saw the urgency of their needs. Faziri began to help his fellow refugees in any way possible. He worked with them to communicate with the UN representatives within the camp. The local hospital had only a handful of nurses available for hundreds of refugee patients, so Faziri showed up at the hospital to care for these patients however he could.

After five years of a complicated refugee processes and deep personal loss, Faziri’s family was relocated to the United States. The firsthand experience among the most marginalized people in the world has driven every decision Faziri has made since arriving on American soil. He took ESL classes to improve his English, but wanted a more in-depth education, so he transitioned into the workplace and started to save money for college. He began attending community college, then transferred to SUNY Brockport, where he is studying political science and International Studies. While working toward his bachelor degree, Faziri has started Rochester Global Refugee Services (RGRS), an organization that serves as a bridge between refugees families and services/resources in the community. And while helping refugees here in Rochester, Faziri is still tirelessly advocating for refugees here in the USA, those back in his former Uganda refugee camp.

Monthly Food Distribution Day

RGRS has a comprehensive plan in place to empower the most defenseless within Nakivale. The first step was the purchase of a corn mill grinding machine. Refugees within Nakivale are given a ration of ungrinded cornmeal to flour each month as their food supply. The grinding machine will benefit 200 families directly and many vulnerable refugees to grind their corn at reasonable prices, without forfeiting a part of their ration as payment, resulting in lower cases of malnutrition, anemia and infant mortality. The second step is providing power, security and training for the ongoing operation of the mill, which creates jobs for refugees in the camp. The predominant and present need is a transformer, which will connect the grinding machine to the UN power source, without which it cannot operate.

Power Transformer needed to power the machine

Faziri’s heart for the most defenseless of society makes an impact on everyone he meets. As he continues to raise awareness of the plight within refugee camps, his passion is contagious. “How can I give back?” becomes “How can we help?” The financial goal for the transformer, security and training to operate the corn mill grinding machine is $20,000 but we have been able to raise $4,300 so far. Please consider partnering with us to provide a basic necessity for our brothers and sisters in Uganda.
