Donation protected
UistFilm, part of Taigh Chearsabhagh Museum & Arts Centre (Scottish Charity # SC 022145), in Lochmaddy, North Uist, are fundraising now to digitise a variety of recently unearthed collections of 8mm film totalling over 9,000' feet or almost 10 hours duration.

Watch the promo video here https://vimeo.com/taigh/faodail2024

Collections to be digitised include:
  • Alex MacIver, a celebrated Pipe Major, from Lochs, Isle of Lewis, who returned home regularly and filmed life in the area.
  • Murdo Campbell, from Benbecula, a well known fiddler and box player. This is the first collection donated to the archive which has sound!! Murdo filmed ceilidhs & music sessions and we cant wait to hear the sound!
  • Murdo MacLeod (Tormod a’ Bhàrd), a builder from South Dell, Ness. Mostly footage from the 60s of Harris.
  • More Mackenzie family Uist footage at Ardheisker, North Uist, from the late 1960s
  • Plus a collection from Mary MacDonald featuring life in Uist and travels working around the world.

The FAODAIL | FOUND digitisation programme was launched in December 2018, when we successfully crowdfunded to digitise the Annie (Chnoc na Luib) Macdonald’s Super8 collection which revealed fantastic gems of Outer Hebridean moving image history. In 2021 the Anne and Bill Scott collection of Berneray footage from the 60s and 70s was digitised and inspired the award-winning feature documentary Dùthchas produced by UistFilm. Subsequent documentaries FAODAIL - Found Film and Beatha nan Eilean featuring different aspects of the archive followed in 2024 and 2025.

We are pleased to announce the launch of the BFI Screen Heritage supported FAODAIL | FOUND website on 1st May. Live music screening events with Pàdruig Morrison and Claire Frances MacNeil to celebrate the website launch happen on 2nd May in Edinburgh and 9th May at Carinish Hall, North Uist. See Taigh-chearsabhagh.org website for details or follow @faodailfilm on instagram

FAODAIL | FOUND will make digitised films accessible online and in venues across the Outer Hebrides. Screening events will present the films to a wide range of audiences to collect detailed information and reminiscences from the eras and locations relating to the films. This added context will be of immense value to Outer Hebridean social history for future generations.

All donors to this campaign will receive a unique free FAODAIL | FOUND video download.
