Join in Elevating the “Untouchable”.

The Musarey are an untouchable caste who live in the southern plains (Tarai) region of Nepal. Like many other untouchable communities in Nepal, the Musarey suffer greatly from severe poverty and a lack of education. Musarey women work 14 to 16 hours a day (as sharecroppers) in the landlord’s fields and are still unable to buy enough food or clothing for their children, or send them to school. The people who benefit from the Musarey's labor are local high-caste leaders. Musarey parents want to educate their children and give them a better future. However, grinding poverty means that children are forced to work from an early age to help support their families.  

Because of ongoing caste-based discrimination the Musarey have received little or no help from Nepal's government, or, indeed, the country's ruling class in general. Funds from abroad, combined with the dedicated efforts of some caring individuals, would be a golden opportunity for the Musarey to build a better life for themselves.

Musarey women have expressed an interest in making clothes as a way to generate extra income. To do this, however, they would need sewing machines and the right kind of training. A sewing machine costs around 100 dollars in Nepal, 6 months training costs 240 dollars, and supplies 150 dollars. This one machine and training however, could completely change someone's life for the better. It is hoped that this fund raising effort would enable the Musarey community to buy significantly more than just one sewing machine. That would make all the difference in the world to the Musarey people.
