Please help us save our beloved village landmark. The floor structure has been completely eaten by termites.
Hello, my name is Jodie Webber and I am trying to raise money to keep the historic Union Church building in Earlysville, Virginia from falling into ruin. Our small group of volunteers is the Friends of the Union Church, and we have looked after the property for the past 30 years. The funds which we hope to raise will be used to replace the entire floor of the building.
Background
Built in 1833 by joint community efforts, the Union Church has always been a place housing many different groups and purposes, even serving as an airplane observation post during WWII. Prominently located on Earlysville Road in the heart of the community, it looks the same today as it did 193 years ago and is listed on the Virginia Landmarks Register and the National Register of Historic Places.
Today
The property today is still used for a variety of community events. All events and maintenance are funded entirely by individual donations. Money has always been tight, but in November 2024, disaster struck. A serious problem with the structural condition of the floor dramatically came to light when a floor section suddenly partially collapsed during a wedding.
It was found that the entire floor system was rotten. Replacement will cost at least $40,000, much more than our small budget can come up with, as we usually receive just enough donations to cover keeping the grass cut.
Why should we do this?
The old Union Church has been a fixture of Earlysville life for a long time. It is a resource that encourages a sense of community identity and spirit. For many years, it has been the setting of the annual village December Carol Sing and the spring Easter Egg Hunt, and is a beautiful, authentically historical setting for weddings. It is a place filled with memories.
100% of all donations will be used for a new floor.
We hope you will join our efforts to save this wonderful old building that is so important to the history and fabric of our village.
