Founded in 1866, one year after slavery ended, Evans Springs Baptist Church served as a vital community resource - providing 160 years of gatherings - community meals, christenings, weddings, funerals, and Sunday services.
The stories of individuals, families, and events associated with the community are important to the continued narrative of African-American communities in rural East Texas following the Emancipation Proclamation.
The mission of the Evans Springs Historical Society mission is to restore and preserve the Evans Springs Baptist Church building and land as well as capture and preserve the history of the Evans Springs Community.
As the community's collective memory, the Evans Spring Historical Society acquires, preserves, and tells Evans Spring’s story to visitors and descendants of those residents to inspire curiosity about, instill knowledge of, and foster a commitment to our history.
Your gift will help restore the church to a working building and create archival space for the community artifacts.
