Hello friends and neighbours,
As many of you know, our small recreation centre sits at the end of a mile‑long gravel road that winds through commonage and farmland here in the west of Ireland. Although we’re the only household on it, the road has always been shared by the whole community — walkers, cyclists, riders, dog‑owners, and anyone who enjoys a quiet stretch of countryside.
Most years, we manage the upkeep ourselves. Between us and the neighbours, we fill potholes, harrow gravel, and keep the lane passable after winter. But this year has been unlike anything we’ve seen. After eight weeks of relentless rain, the lake and bogs overflowed and washed the gravel clean off long sections of the road. What’s left is barely passable, and for the past four weeks we’ve had no choice but to close our gates to visitors.
We’ve spoken with the local road engineer, and the county council has promised help with drainage and ditching — but they can’t begin the groundworks until spring. Unfortunately, we can’t wait that long. To reopen in the new year, we urgently need to bring in a large amount of stone and gravel, along with diesel for the tractor and digger to repair the worst of the damage.
This is more than we can manage alone this time. So, with a bit of humility, we’re asking for your help. If you enjoy using the road, or simply want to support a small rural centre trying to keep going through a tough season, any contribution — big or small — will make a real difference.
Together, we can get the road safe and open again for everyone who loves it.
Thank you for your kindness and support.
