Dear Friends of our Father R. Arlen Johnson Esq.
It is with great sadness that we report to you that since Arlen's passing on 9/8/2020 our family is in serious financial trouble. We have already liquidated most of our assets and currently only have the lake house left. The lake house project began in 2005 and abruptly stopped due to the economic crash of 2008 where the home was under water with the project 75% complete. Soon after Arlen had his first brain surgery in 2014 where they cut his entire head open from ear to ear, things haven't been the same since then. He went straight back to work but retained only a portion of his income and never got to finishing this project.
Arlen Built the lake house to be a gallery and a meeting place for all his dear clients and friends but got a bit ahead of himself, the building is 6000 sq ft with a 4 car garage and three 20 x 40 patios terraced facing the water. The design was bold, and his vision is clear, but it is such a vast project that even the remaining 25% is costing a fortune to complete and by 2008 the total investment was already around 1.25M with now 700K still owed. His youngest son Steven was forced to take the families financial issues head on, he quit his career as a CAD designer and field engineer in Boston to help straighten up the family's assets. He managed to clean up both the Mendon property and Milford property and sell them both. The family is currently living off what is left from those sales.
Currently the lake property houses our mother Nora, Arlen's wife of 33 years as well as his son Steven who still to this day struggles to complete the project on a shoestring budget while caring for his mother and tending to the vast and complicated web left for him with very little explanation. Steven has had to turn down several projects and contracts since to do this, the most recent of which was an $80K contract to design restaurants in Boston 9-5. He cannot devote time to anything else but running crews of guys as well as all the rest of his newly acquired duties at the lake house because it is clear that should this property not sell for roughly 1.5M we will not be able to adequately house and care for our mother who currently suffers from Mental illness and chronic pain in her legs which causes her severe mobility issues.
It has been a dire situation since our fathers decline last July after his second brain surgery. When Steven was able to seize the reigns of financial power within our family, a lot was shown to have been neglected or forgotten about and his expenses were 25K per month. Steven managed single-handedly to track down the hundreds of vendors pulling ACHs from his accounts and stop the bleeding but even after doing this, with the mortgage being 6K per month, and with the expense of managing this property as well as the various essentials, the total burn rate is around 12K per month. This is without factoring in the project needing to be finished before the house can be marketed and sold.
Steven has already managed to remove untold amounts of material left from the stone masons in 2008, complete the driveway along with a 65' retaining wall on the right side of it, trench and run electrical conduit down to the water over 200 ft from the main panel, install 3 AC condensers, repair the aging stone work as well as build 2 new brick areas. He is now working on a floating deck in the middle patio which will make the outdoor space nearly complete and walkable. Steven spoke at length with a reputable realtor in the area and worked from his advice. So far, the project has cost over 35K and we haven't even touched the inside yet, where many flooring projects, and bathroom upgrades are essential.
It is in this late moment that, out of desperation, we reach out to you to help us secure our mothers future and release Steven from the bondage of this debt by helping us to complete the impeccable vision of our Father Arlen on Webster Lake. We know he would have done such a fabulous job competing this and hosting art and business events had he not been afflicted with brain cancer which recently took his life. It is our goal to do justice to his legacy and deliver his wife, our mother, to safety.
We hope to host an event in his honor this spring upon completion, the first event this house will have hosted, and we hope to show honor to all of you who made it possible. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
Sincerely,
The Johnson Family
