Corozal still needs help. When hurricane Maria battered the island of Puerto Rico, it did not spare the small town I call home. The storm shattered homes, washed out bridges, and wiped out farms. It destroyed lives.
As a reporter, I have spent weeks traveling across the island and asking questions. On my latest visit to Corozal, I met with the mayor and community leaders. I talked to people around town and knocked on doors to ask one question, "What do you need?"
I walked away with this list...
1. Power 2. Water 3. Food 4. Batteries 5. Tarps 6. Flashlights/lanterns 7. Insect repellent
I can't promise power. With your help, however, we can get the other supplies on the list to Corozal. Please join me in partnering with Hispanic Federation to purchase and deliver supplies to the small mountainous community in the interior part of the island. The money raised will go straight to Hispanic Federation, an organization already doing incredible work in Corozal. Your donation is tax deductible.
Corozal, you are not forgotten. A letter to you...
November 17, 2017
You don’t know me very well, but I know you. I know your history and your spirit. It has defined much of mine.
While I left as a child, I returned every summer at my mother’s insistence. She wanted to make sure I never forgot the lush trees of the mountainside, the rich soil my family cultivated, or the faith that has guided us.
More importantly she made sure, I never forgot the people—their kindness and humility.
The values ingrained in my family, in this community, molded me into the person I am today.
Now more than ever, I know you are in need of the very kindness and generosity you have shown me.
This time I want to make sure no one forgets what has been stripped from the mountainside and the lives of the people I call home. I want to make sure no one forgets the resilience you have proven in the days after Hurricane Maria. You have never asked anything of me, but that is my promise to you. I have never forgotten what you have given me, my roots, and never will.
