I have had the fortune of being “stuck” on the paradisiacal island of Sri Lanka , during this crazy time. I’ve felt blessed to be welcomed to the community here, been sat at plenty insistent tables and been border line force fed, so many incredible meals. And feel indebted to them and have been searching for a way to give back.

During lockdown, last year (2020) Kalum , Prianta and I sourced food from the local stalls in Ahangama and divided it into 10 food packs, for the hardest hit households in the village. It became evident that so much more support was needed.

Since then as a result of generous donations, hard working locals and the support of the local temple. We get out to 200 households, in Ahangama and surrounding areas. 

This time round, we will again focus on the most deprived households around Ahangama, my now home. But will look further afield to aid some of the severely deprived areas in other parts of the country.  Areas where safe drinking water is a luxury to most. 

For those that haven't heard: 

Sri Lanka is still ravaged by COVID-19. On top of this Sri Lanka has recently been struck by the worst environmental disaster in it’s history. An estimated 3 billion plastic pellets, along with other toxic pollution, have flooded the majority of the West and South Coast causing detrimental and irreversible damage to Marine life and ecosystems. All as a result of a sunken container ship off Colombo. 

Fishing is one of the primary industries in Sri Lanka and the overall impact this disaster will have is to be seen. But the immediate impact on local households is obvious and Dahl Delivery aim to help by delivering packages with basic necessities to those that need it the most.  

These packs cost around £12.00 and contain all the basic food essentials, with a few sugary treats. We also include soap and washing powder, and should keep the average household of 6 people going for 2 weeks or so.
