Cobham and Downside Residents’ Association (CDRA) opposes the 650-home development proposed at Chippings Farm, off the Portsmouth Road in Cobham. New homes are important, but this especially large development will have serious, long-lasting negative impacts on everyone in our community.
The land is Green Belt. We need to protect this; once it is lost, it is lost forever. The site’s location is not sustainable logistically as residents would need to rely on private transport for work, shopping, leisure and access to essential services. Local bus operations are limited, especially in the evenings and at weekends.
Our existing infrastructure is inadequate to cope with such a scale of development:
- Much-increased traffic flow would exacerbate current congestion at busy junctions along the A307 and Fairmile Lane and create increased safety risks in the proximity of nearby schools.
- The impact of this proposal on road usage cannot be considered in isolation; the cumulative effect of all significant planning applications in the surrounding area, regardless of implementation stage, must be taken into account.
- The buildings would impact negatively on the visual aspect of the landscape.
- Flooding and sewerage capacity are serious issues, as is the environmental impact of air pollution and noise pollution.
- There would be very serious implications for access to doctors’ surgeries at the local health centre, which is already under considerable pressure.
Large planning applications are supported by teams of professional consultants, transport specialists, environmental advisers and other experts. Local residents also need access to professional expertise to quantify identified issues. CDRA is run entirely by volunteers and has very limited funds. We are therefore seeking to raise £10,000 to obtain professional support – as well as pay for other incidental expenses – so that we can present a strong, evidence based response. From experience, we expect the major part of such funding to be used for consultancy input, with the remainder allocated to publicity and communications.
Every donation helps: £10, £25, £50 or £100 may seem small, but together they will allow us to secure the professional expertise that we will need to develop sound planning based reasons to support our case. If 400 households give just £25, we will reach our target.
Please help us to support the local community and oppose this inappropriate development. Every donation will be gratefully received. All funds will be ring-fenced for the purpose of opposing the Chippings Farm proposal in the Cobham and Downside Residents’ Association business bank account, managed by the CDRA Treasurer. No money will go into any personal account.
