Wood-Fire Kiln Building In China
Donation protected
Friends, family, and supporters,
I am a working ceramics artist/apprentice in Gresham, Wisconsin. Since I graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point in May of 2013, I have been working here alongside wood-fire potter, Simon Levin. Over the course of the last 11 months Simon has been the best teacher I have ever had, helping me build an increasingly strong body of work. As an apprentice I have my own studio space, materials, and amazing opportunities to go to events where I am creating great contacts with other prominent figures in the field of ceramics. Simon has presented me with an incredible opportunity that I will need extra support to accomplish. Simon has been invited to go to China in September 2014 to build 2 kilns for the China Academy of the Arts in Hangzhou.
Simon will cover room and board if I can pay my airfare. We will be there for 3 weeks, building kilns and working with other art students. This is an extraordinary opportunity, to say the least. Simon has extensive knowledge and experience building kilns in various parts of the world like East Timor, Taiwan, as well as the United States. The trip would supply me with the knowledge and experience of taking part in building 2 different types of wood-fired kilns. Opportunities like this will enable me to create my own pottery business some day which is why I came to apprentice with Simon in the first place. I have longed to visit China since my first Asian art history class with Courtney Chaffin at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. Her passion and enthusiasm for Asian art has stayed with me, often finding its way into my work. This experience would give me a chance to see some of this art and culture first hand.
I need to raise around $2,000 for airfare. Fortunately I am a potter and have something to offer in exchange for money. I will also be selling pottery through my Etsy site. All the money from purchases on the Etsy site will go towards this fundraising effort as well.
