Bring Karaoke Back to Skid Row
Donation protected
Located in the heart of Skid Row, Central City Church of the Nazarene and its non-profit arm Central City Community Outreach are dying to get back to their (and everyone's) favorite program.
For 25 years, Central City has faithfully held space for joy, celebration, catharsis, and expression in the heart of the most destitute and distraught neighborhood. Their Karaoke program was famous not just in Skid Row, but across LA and beyond. It has been featured in the LA Times, Vox, Associated Press, and dozens of others news outlets.
Early on in March 2020, when little was known about COVID-19, Central City tried to hold karaoke as safely as possible, with generous sprays of Lysol, and using disposable coffee filters to cover microphones in use. Ultimately, in order to keep up with what was coming out about the pandemic, karaoke had to shut down indefinitely.
I've had the wonderful opportunity to come alongside my friends at CCCO and support them in their work to embody hospitality, care, and best practices in the heart of Skid Row.

While variants continue to present challenges, and safely doing karaoke is not yet a guarantee, Central City is looking to start preparations to reopen its favorite pastime, while reimagining its faithful presence in Skid Row into the future as a center for hospitality.
During the year and a half of shutdown, reimagining Skid Row service, and pivoting to meet new needs, the karaoke machine went missing. Additionally, Central City knows that doing karaoke safely, whenever that will be, will require additional equipment, cleaning supplies, and time and effort. In addition to karaoke equipment and safety supplies, donations will support crucial facilities (rent) and staffing costs which have also been depleted during the pandemic.
Your donation will help bring this much needed ministry back to the people who need it most. Central City offers one of the only "ministries" on Skid Row that prioritizes joy, celebration, and community.
Please consider giving to help get this amazing program back for the people of Skid Row.
