Built in 1929 by Richard H. Wright II, Whitehall Terrace is more than just a historic mansion; it represents the heart and soul of Durham’s rich cultural tapestry. Situated prominently in Duke Park, this estate holds immense potential to become a thriving hub of wellness, education, art, and cultural engagement for the community.

Our Vision: A Community Sanctuary

We are dedicated to transforming Whitehall Terrace into a dynamic space that fosters healing, creativity, and community connection. Our plans include:

• Restoring the 6,000-square-foot historic mansion, making it a central location for wellness programs, art exhibitions, cultural workshops, and educational events, including an upcoming exhibition of sacred ancestral artifacts celebrating the rich history of the diaspora.

• Developing the surrounding 2.6 acres of land into accessible healing gardens, outdoor art installations, and welcoming community spaces that honor Durham’s diverse cultural heritage.

• Creating sustainable, inclusive programming with sliding-scale and free community services, ensuring everyone in our community has access to wellness and cultural enrichment.

First and foremost, THANK YOU. Your generosity has helped us come this far, and we are deeply grateful. We’re currently working hard to secure Whitehall Terrace for Bulltánica, including closing on a construction loan. This loan is a temporary measure as we strive to raise enough funds to pay for the renovation.

We have exciting updates and some important new needs:

Fundraising Progress:

• Goal: $40,000

• Current Total Raised: $990

Critical Repairs & Enhancements Needed:

To secure the future of Whitehall Terrace and create a welcoming, accessible community well-being space, we have specific improvements planned:

1. Roof Repair & Rooftop Terrace Creation:

• Cost: $32,750

• Scope:

• Removal of existing roofing and flashing

• Inspecting and replacing damaged insulation and OSB boards

• Installation of new EPDM roofing and proper flashing

• Addition of a shade structure, lighting, and comfortable seating for a rooftop terrace

• Why it matters: Transforming the rooftop into a peaceful space for tea, meditation, and community gatherings will enhance our healing offerings and create a unique sanctuary.

2. Plumbing & Additional Bathroom Installation:

• Cost: $8,186.38

• Scope:

• Installation of a second downstairs half-bathroom

• Replacement of sewer ejector pump system

• Installation of new washing machine box and drain system

• Why it matters: Essential for accommodating larger community events, this addition ensures functionality and convenience for all guests.

3. Wheelchair Ramp Installation:

• Cost: $5,000

• Scope:

• Construction of a wheelchair-accessible ramp

• Why it matters: Improving accessibility is crucial to making Whitehall Terrace inclusive and welcoming to everyone.
