Let Black Flow Artists Breathe, Bond, and Belong
When you’re the only Black person in a space that’s supposed to be about freedom, it doesn’t always feel like freedom. You stay grateful, but you stay guarded. You move, but you watch your back. You flow, but you’re always a little frozen.
At a recent retreat, I was the only Black person. Twelve Indian hoopers. One white hooper. One me. They were kind. They were beautiful. They welcomed me. But there were moments when I wished I could just be—with someone who just gets it.
They sang songs I didn’t know. Ordered foods I’d never heard of. Laughed in ways that made me ache for the lingo, the flavor, the familiarity of home. I smiled through it, but I missed being able to exhale. I missed us.
That ache? That’s why I’m organizing a trip for 12 Black flow artists to AfroNation in Punta Cana. Because we deserve to dance without hypervigilance. To flow without shrinking. To vibe to the music we love—Afrobeats, trap, soul, Amapiano—without feeling “other.” To be surrounded by people who look like us, move like us, and feel like us.
This trip isn’t just a getaway. It’s a homecoming. It’s healing. It’s resistance wrapped in rhythm. It’s joy as protest and as prayer. It’s an overdue answer to the question, “Where do Black flow artists go to be seen?”
We’ve gathered during crisis—during uprisings and pandemics. Now we want to gather for JOY. To breathe. To bond. To belong. Together.
How You Can Help??
We need to raise: • $750 immediately to lock in hotel rooms • $7,550 by October 17 to cover the remaining balance • $400 per person for flights, ideally within the next 30 days
Every dollar helps us get closer to joy.
And if you’ve ever… • Been the only one in the room • Ached for cultural belonging • Needed a break from survival • Longed to be your whole self in a space built with you in mind …this is your invitation to give. Help us create something sacred. Help us build a new rhythm.
Help us go from surviving to soaring.
