The systemic murder and incarceration of Black Americans leaves many of us feeling powerless to enact change. In a time when so many suffer within a racist system, we can reach out to incarcerated people and offer resources in the form of requested literature. We can also speak with our dollars and support Black-owned businesses.
In their own words, "The Prisoners Literature Project is an all-volunteer, non-profit group that sends free books directly to prisoners who request them from throughout the United States. Working almost continuously for thirty years, our U.S. prison books program has gotten (literally) tons of books into the American prison system."
This fundraiser aims to collect $2,500, to be used to purchase books from the PLP's wish list from Marcus Books, the nation's oldest Black-owned bookstore; many of the most requested books on the PLP's list are books covering Black history, Latinx history, human rights and prison reform.
Any remaining funds will be donated directly to the PLP to assist with mailing and operational costs.
