This is Rafael, three months old. Rafael was born and has been in CICU in Children's Mercy Hospital since June 2, 2025. He has a heart defect called heterotaxy and has two very leaky valves. Rafael has gone through two open-heart surgeries to fix his leaky valves, but they have failed; his valve is still very leaky. We were told that there was nothing else they could do for Rafael but have him go into a very risky heart surgery with only a 4% chance of surviving in order to help his liver be better. So, we took that 4% and made a decision on continuing with everything. Last week, he was placed on an ECMO machine (life support) because all of his organs collapsed, and he had so much retained fluid on him. They told us he would be in a coma state, but that same night, Rafael woke up and was awake and alert. Doctors couldn't believe it because he is still showing us how strong he is and wants to continue to live! Rafael does not give up; he has been such a fighter and a strong little baby with lots of hope to keep living. He has given it his all, so he will be going into his 3rd open-heart surgery to get a mechanical valve placed in his heart on Sept 10, 2025, to help his liver get better because it has been determined he will need a heart transplant, and in order to be put on that list, his liver needs to get better. It has been very tough going through all of this because he's been intubated since the third day he was born. I have only been able to hold him three times since he was born, but it's also been very tough to split myself in two different places at two different times sometimes because we have three wonderful kids at home as well, 14, 9, and 2 (brothers). It hasn't been stressful for us because we are fighting with Rafael and for Rafael, trying to give him every chance we can to be able to repair his heart and live. God has shown us many times that He is there and that Rafael has a very big purpose in this world for us and for him. We have never done this, but with so little income coming in and bills stacking up and having to be at the hospital day and night, we are asking if it's within your heart to help us get by through this situation and support us with a small donation for hospital bills. It would be a blessing for us and for our family. Any little bit counts, and we want to thank you for taking your time to stop by and read Rafael’s story. We are very blessed to have him in our lives, and we will continue to fight with him and for him, and we are leaving it in God's hands! Please continue to keep praying for Rafael to one day be able to come home with his family and brothers!
