My name is Lance and I'm raising money to subsidize housing for Annie and her four young cousins to keep them together until appropriate state resources become available. Annie has rented a small townhome from us for nearly 10 years and has become a friend. Her housing needs, and life, drastically changed 6 months ago when she agreed to take in her four young cousins (7,9,13 and 15). Here is their story.
Two years ago they lost their maternal grandmother (Annie’s sister) who was their safety net. Six months ago, with a father who was already out of their lives and a mother who child services deemed negligent ,four kids went into freefall. That’s when Annie stepped in. Even though she didn’t have the resources and she lived in a two bedroom townhouse, when the state called Annie as their last resort to avoid splitting up the kids and putting them in foster care, Annie brought them into her home.
Today, the kids are doing better in school than they have in years but their housing is in jeopardy and they are struggling to meet daily needs. Because of HOA rules and the need for enough space for 5 people they are forced to move. On Annie’s limited income and slow, minimal support from child and state services they cannot afford a larger apartment.
The goal of this campaign is to raise $15,000 to provide a subsidy for housing for the next year so that Annie and these four kids don’t end up living in hotels, couch surfing or being forced to split up. A year of stability will enable Annie to work with the state to acquire appropriate ongoing support and in a perfect world, keep the kids together long enough to get their mother involved in their lives again in a healthy way.
Time is of the essence as Annie needs to move within the next few weeks. Funds will be use to cover typical move in expenses, first and last month's rent, security deposit and a monthly subsidy toward monthly rent.
