UPDATE:

Overview:
Together, The Alwan Foundation and The Proud Maroons are looking to turn the most silenced fans in the world into the loudest. Named after Qatar’s national football team’s nickname, the Maroons, the Proud Maroons was created to highlight the persecution of the local LGBTQ+ community in Qatar despite their temporary PR message: “Gay fans are welcome.”

The Proud Maroons is the only LGBTQ+ National Football Supporters’ Group that can’t have fans from its own nation because homosexuality is currently illegal in Qatar, with punishment ranging from three years in prison up to the death penalty.

The Proud Maroons was founded by Dr. Nas Mohamed, along with his non-profit, The Alwan Foundation. Dr. Nas serves as the group's president and is the first Qatari to come out as gay publicly. With your support and donations, The Alwan Foundation hopes to advance LGBTQ+ rights in the Middle East with a focus on the Gulf region.

With the upcoming football championship games putting a spotlight on Qatar, there’s no better time and no better stage to show global support for their local LGBTQ+ community.

More about The Alwan Foundation
The Alwan Foundation aims to collect evidence-based data to accurately reflect the circumstance and living conditions of the LGBTQ+ community in different Gulf countries. Whatever the path is to change, visibility is the first step. The Alwan Foundation aims to help local LGBTQ+ Qataris through support, advocacy, and research—areas that are currently nonexistent.

More about Dr. Nas
Nas Mohamed is a primary care physician and is the first queer Qatari to come out publicly—and he did so bravely in an exclusive interview with the BBC. He has been campaigning to bring visibility to the LGBTQ+ community in Qatar, and documenting evidence of persecution, as demonstrated in his report with Human Rights Watch. You can hear more from Dr. Nas by following him on Instagram.

Thank you for your support and solidarity!
