Alaskan Students Aid Hurricane Relief in U.S.V.I.

Donation protected
We are fifteen students from the University of Alaska Fairbanks.
This March, we are volunteering to help those who have been most dramatically impacted by Hurricane Irma and Hurricane Maria. We will be traveling to the U.S. Virgin Islands to to spend our spring break aiding in hurricane relief ranging from debris removal to playground repairs.
Alternative Spring Break is a student led and driven program. Though we will travel in March, the work to begin fundraising started long ago. With $35,000 to raise for Alternative Spring Break, we have been hard at work. In addition to our many fundraising efforts, each participant has paid $475 to help offset our monetary goal.

Who will benefit?
We will be working to benefit community members of the U.S. Virgin Islands. We will be performing hurricane relief through local non-profits, My Brother's Workshop and Friends of the Virgin Islands National Park. The scope of our work will range from repairing and painting buildings, to trash cleanup and debris removal, to trail maintenance and ruins clearing. While this volunteer service benefits the communities we serve, it also benefits the student participants. This is a unique learning experience in both planning and execution, and is one that sparks a lifelong passion for volunteer service.

What the funds will be used for?
All funds will be used to alleviate the cost of transportation, food, and housing.  The cost of roundtrip airfare from Fairbanks, Alaska to St. Thomas, U.S.V.I. amounts to roughly $2,100 per volunteer. Each participant has paid $475 to help offset our monetary goal. This GoFundMe is simply one of many fundraisers we have put on in order to reach our total goal of of $35,000.

How soon do we need the funds?
We will be volunteering during our university's spring break from March 9th - 16th.

What your support means to us.
Your support  means keeping a university tradition alive while teaching a new group of students about citizenship in the world. Your support is developing student leaders and their passion to volunteer. Furthermore, your support is sending out Alaskan students who will leave upon others, a good impression and a positive image of the Alaskan people.

Your support is the world to us.

Thank you!
We are grateful for your generous support; To make a difference in our student leaders and the global community at large, we need your help. Gifts to the Alternative Break aid our programs and initiatives, and assist in fostering local, national, and international community service learning opportunities. Through our programming, we ultimately hope to inspire the next generation of Alternative Break students, in order to continue giving back to the world that gave to us.

Sincerely yours,

Our hard working participants: Michael, Katharine, Heidi, RJ, Evan, Cole, Jack, Gerald, Max, Macalaugh, Kernell, Shania, Claire, Uziel, and Parker
