It started with one child and his teacher.

He was her student—bright and kind, but carrying more than any child should. After a traumatic event sent him to the hospital, she visited him multiple times a week out of concern. That simple act of compassion turned into something much more: after the school year ended, the teacher was contacted out of the blue and asked if she would be open to fostering her former student.

The teacher and her family of five said yes, welcoming him into their home just two days later.

Two days after that, the family received another unexpected request. The child's three siblings needed a new home that day, and there was nowhere else lined up for them to go. Could the teacher and her family take in the three additional children as well, at least for a little while?

This was not the life they had been planning just five days earlier. They were already parenting three children of their own, including a toddler. Still, when faced with the possibility of the siblings being separated, the family said yes to all four of them. Within a month, they had upended their entire lives and moved to a bigger home to accommodate the nearly doubled household size.

Nearly a year later the four siblings, two boys and two girls ages 3 to 11, are safe together and thriving in a home filled with love, structure and safety.

Unfortunately, the system that placed the children with this family has fallen far short of providing the resources and support required to meet their needs.

The family has poured everything into creating consistency for kids who needed it most, but the emotional and financial strain has taken a toll. There is just so much that these children need, and the burden has almost entirely fallen on this family.

They stepped in when no one else could. Now, they need us to step up.
