Street Saviours Outreach Society is a grassroots, secular, all-volunteer nonprofit organization providing overdose response and harm-reduction to the streets and alleys of Vancouver's Downtown Eastside by weeknight foot patrols. In addition to medical aid, we distribute food, hydration, rain gear and thermal blankets, warm clothing, as well as local resources, conversation, community connection and love — bridging a critical gap in resources after dark.

Since 2016, and stirred into action from a burning sense in its founders — who could no longer sit by and watch our loved ones continue to die day-by-day, senselessly, and in the absence of effective policy solutions to stop the rising death toll — our volunteers have been working tirelessly to combat the opioid crisis and have together spared countless hundreds of loved ones from the life-changing trauma of receiving the worst phone calls of their lives.

Our teams are comprised of people from all walks of life united by a common goal, including paramedics, first responders, OFA-3 attendants, healthcare professionals, students, social workers, and other individuals of diverse backgrounds who want to help—many with lived experience of addiction and homelessness in their personal lives.

Together, we seek to provide care premised on a worldview that focuses itself first on judgement-free acceptance, support and unconditional love that is free from stigma or moral prescription.

What We Do:

✔ Overdose Response & Emergency First Aid – Our teams are equipped with oxygen tanks, airway and respiratory devices, naloxone, trauma kits and wound-care supplies.

✔ Harm Reduction, Clothing & Gear – We distribute naloxone kits and harm-reduction gear, small clothing and hygiene items, and outdoor survival gear for the weather, such as emergency blankets, hand warmers and rain ponchos.

✔ Hydration & Nutrition – We also make sandwiches each night to hand out along with pastries, snacks, water, and the occasional fresh, warm meal.

✔ Resources & Connection – We strive to meet people where they're at in a safe and stigma-free manner and to help meet their immediate needs, whether through friendly conversation or sharing knowledge of local resources such as shelters, housing info, safe transportation, detox centers or healthcare services.

Why It Matters

With no bureaucracy or red tape, SSOS operates efficiently and effectively, responding in real-time to urgent needs in the community. Every night, our volunteers deliver hundreds of supplies and provide direct medical support to those who would otherwise go without.

How You Can Help

SSOS runs entirely on donations and out-of-pocket contributions from our volunteers. Your support keeps us operating from our Main Street office; covering storage, monthly rent, food and water supplies, and lifesaving medical equipment.

In addition to monetary donations, which are instrumental to upkeeping our facilities, supplies and equipment costs, we are more than happy to accept in-kind donations in the form of:

- Nutella, jam, peanut butter and spreads

- Non-perishable or individually packaged snack items

- Small clothing items (socks, gloves, toques)

- Mylar blankets, hand warmers

And are always accepting new volunteers!
