Help Us Stay With Our Son

Donation protected
Wilder Rhodes was born on June 24th, 2022, at UAB Women's and Infant's center in Birmingham, Alabama. He was 36 weeks, or one month early. He has Trisomy 18, a fatal condition that causes multiple birth defects. Most babies with T18 don't make it to birth. Of those that do, most don't make it more than a few hours or days . We knew for months what the ultimate outcome would be, but we decided as long as he kept trying, so would we. We just wanted to get him here, and to meet our son. We did not expect to have more than a few hours with him, if that.

Kandice (his mom) went through a dangerous and painful pregnancy, and were it not for the amazing medical team at UAB, likely neither she nor Wilder would still be here. Were it not for the amazing surgeons, Wilder would not have made it more than three days. Now here we are, almost four weeks later, and trying to stay here in Birmingham to be with him for whatever time he has left. We do not know if he will ever get to leave the Children's Hospital NICU.

The facts are tough to swallow, but he will not be with us much longer. Despite the surgery to repair a malformed esophagus and trachea (keeping him from aspriating his own stomach acid and effectively drowning), his lungs are not doing as well as we had hoped, and it now appears he may not be able to come off the ventilator and go home at all. Even if he does, we are told he will likely not make it long. Could be days, or weeks. Months if we are lucky.

For now we stay with him as much as possible, savoring every moment he opens his eyes and looks at us; every hour we get to sit and hold him, tethered by the ventilator tubes and IV lines. We just want as much time as we are allowed with our son before he leaves us. He is on temporary loan, as his grandfather said.

Now for the reason I have created this gofundme - something I never imagined I would do for myself:

We live over two hours away, in north Alabama. We also have a three-year-old daughter, Juliette, who is on the autism spectrum and having a hard time living the nomadic lifestyle of staying away from home, breaking her routines. Much of Kandice's time is spent tending to her (Often, daddy will simply not do.) Being here, I have not been able to work my regular job. Although I have been driving Uber to make as much money as possible. It is expensive existing away from home...food, fast food, gasoline, plus all of our regular bills which don't stop just because the rest of our lives have been put on hold. Without being able to stay at the Ronald Mcdonald House, we wouldn't have afforded even a few days here. We are going in the hole rapidly. I can't keep burning both ends of the candle, barely sleeping and barely getting time with Wilder or Juliette or Kandice, and barely making enough money to sustain our existence here, without even paying all of our bills.

We would be extremely grateful if you could contribute so that we can continue to stay here with our son for what will be his very short, very limited life. If I could have more time to be with my family in this already stressful situation, and not have to worry about how we will pay the phones, the car notes, and buy food, etc...it would make all the difference in the world. If we can simply raise enough to pay our bills for a month or two, so that we can afford to experience the miracle that is this little boy ... I cannot express the gratitude adequately.

If you are able to contribute, we thank you eternally. If you are not able to financially help, we would appreciate you sharing this so that more people may be aware and able to contribute.

Sincerely,
Jeremy Crowson
