A Midwife for our Baby Blessing

I was begining to wonder if I could ever conceive....and then a blessing came into my life. His father and I did not plan for him....but he and the Most High had plans of their own.

Where did it all begin? Six years ago I began spending half of every year in Belize working with local communities to develop and empower one another. I work with the NGO Peacework and have also started my own community organizaton called ComeUNITY Works which focuses on using ART as a tool for social change. In 2013, I found a beautiful childrens book that was illustrated by Ras Jahsun of FariStudios. The book was called Indigo Blume and it was about a little girl that inspired her peers to beautify their neighborhood. It touched me and I wrote him to see how I could get the book for some of the schools I work with in Belize. Immediately we connected, not only did he offer books but asked if there was anywhere he could do a mural in Belize. I could think of 10 places. Within 2 months we had sketches for two mural sites in the town of Dangriga, the roots and culture capital of Belize, and we  secured funding for the materials for the two-week project. Pictures of these inspiring and humbling projects can be seen on ComeUNITY Works facebook page. (https://www.facebook.com/comeunityworks?ref=hl )

In 2014 we continued the works in Dangriga but also expanded to Belize City where we painted a two-story mural at the Stella Maris School for the Deaf. My sister is deaf and deaf culture is a special part of my roots. This was an especially touching project for me. I contacted local DJ and Sound Engineer, Lindy D, to see about volunteering his musical services for the project. He agreed. Through music and art, there is so much positivity to be shared for the youth and Ras Jahsun, Lindy and I all believe in the power of communication through creation.

In early 2015, Lindy and I had just found out that we were expecting a baby blessing and so Ras Jahsun and I were not sure if we would be able to continue the mural works for this year.....and then we were contacted by Kylah, a social worker at Belize Central Prison who wanted us to beautify the Youth Facility. She found us funding through the local non-profit Restore Belize and we were truly inspired by the project and the audience it was reaching. How could we say no?  This has been our most rewarding and hearttouching project so far. We were humbled by the relationships we built and the stories we heard.

It was during this time that I shared with Ras Jahsun my hopes for having a midwife to assist me in my delivery. Some women dream about a wedding, well I dream about upholding the sacred and beautiful journey of bringing new life into the world. I never knew how to make it happen.....finances were holding me back.....and that is when Jahsun, my brother for life, offered me one of his paintings to auction off. Tears came to my eyes. Not only did his gesture touch my heart on another level, his art speaks to the divine feminine, the sacred goddess in each and every one of us. It is the perfect art to offer in exchange for the care of a midwife.

Shortly after this mural project I returned to California....and then I met the most wonderful mother/daughter midwife team and I just knew that this was possible. I had to find a way. With heads, hearts and spirits aligned, I believe we can find a way to afford bringing our blessing into the world in a sacred space, honoring the natural journey of childbirth. Where there is a will, there is a way.....the Most High is watching over our son, our SUN. Our shining light.

So for all those who are inspired to support our hopes of having a midwife, I offer you the chance to win one of FariStudios beautiful, inspiring and uplifting paintings, customized to your liking.

Painting is 36x48. For every 25.00$ donated, one chance at winning will be in your name. Drawing will be held at the end of September, 2015.
