Sones de mi Tierra 2023

Hello students, alumni, and community members!

We are Grupo Folklórico de USC, a student organization that dances traditional, Mexican folk dance. We are a steadily growing group, with 30 members who are passionate about folklórico. Our group hosts two cultural performances every year, our Día de los Muertos and Sones de mi Tierra showcases in the USC Village. Our group has been able to put on these showcases thanks to generous funding from the Latino Student Assembly and Undergraduate Student Government.

In preparation for our upcoming showcase on April 8, Sones de mi Tierra, we submitted the required paperwork months in advance. However, we were just notified yesterday that both sponsors are unable to provide funding for our showcase due to insufficient funds. Today marks exactly one month away from our showcase.

We had already secured a vendor, and for the rentals of a stage, 300 chairs, and a tent dressing room to store and change into our traditional vestuario, has amounted to $5,000. Without funding from our previous sponsors, it has jeopardized our annual spring showcase.

Our members and our wonderful instructor have worked and practiced tirelessly to prepare for this showcase. Grupo Folklórico de USC has become a space for Latinx students and alumni to create a community on our campus. Our showcases are spaces where the greater Los Angeles community can come together and celebrate Mexican heritage. Our group’s efforts are an exclamation that we are still here, and we are not going anywhere.

If you are willing and able, we hope you consider donating toward our Sones de mi Tierra showcase. If we are able to meet our goal, we invite you to attend, where we will highlight all of our donors and display the beauty of Mexican culture through dance.
