2 Mommas and 2 Preemies Request Financial Support
Our Story: 7 months ago, my wife Tracy and I found out we were expecting twins - it was our biggest dream to start a Family together! You can imagine how thrilled we were after 4.5 years of attempting to get pregnant via IVF. This emotional roller coaster was extremely hard for us but with our determination we continued to persevere our dreams of starting a family.
We are both nurses. My wife Tracy is a registered nurse assistant manager of a long-term care facility in Kimberley. I was a working as a licensed practical nurse at five different facilities taking as many shifts as possible given I haven’t been able to secure a full-time role. We have a beautiful dog @Marvinbearthebernedoodle who is 3 years old.
Little did we anticipate needing to be emergency air-lifted from our home in Kimberley, BC to the nearest NICU Facility (Surrey, BC) during the presence of this global pandemic, to deliver our twins - 3 months early.
After my water initially breaking at 27 weeks, we were received and cared for by the warm and wonderful staff of the Surrey Memorial Hospital. Under their exceptional care, we managed to delay labor for 2 weeks. April 16th, I gave birth to two gorgeous miracle babies at 29 weeks – a boy and a girl – Sawyer & Elsie!
Our Current Status: We are incredibly grateful to have been able to receive the specialized care of the NICU Team here at the Surrey Memorial Hospital. Now we have learned our little ones will need to remain in the NICU until their birth date, July 2 or longer depending on their growth and development. The Doctors want to ensure our babies get the healthiest start possible to their life before returning home.
April 20th, Tracy & I were discharged from the hospital. We would normally have been sent to Ronald McDonald House or other similar housing services but due to the corona virus protocols, we have had to secure other private accommodation. We are happy to report we have been successful in securing a suite that is in close proximity to the hospital complete with a kitchen so we can cook. We have friends and friends’ parents helping with laundry and shopping. We feel very blessed even though we are far away from the comfort of home, family, friends and our community.
We are back and forth to the hospital several times a day and continue to be amazed by the incredible staff, daily care plans and specialized tests Elsie & Sawyer are receiving as they slowly progress.
Our Request: We have incurred many unexpected expenses already. i.e. a flight for Tracy to Vancouver, daily Skip-the-Dishes meals for Tracy as she didn’t have meal support in hospital and neither of us could leave the hospital. Now we have accommodation, transport and possible preemie medical needs/rentals, as well as navigating how to get home.
To top it off, we both had to leave our jobs earlier than expected. I was mandated by Interior Health due to COVID-19 to leave my jobs as I was considered high-risk being pregnant and working in multiple front line facilities. Tracy also was required to go on leave weeks prior to COVID and all of this due to major knee surgery. Now she is not able to go back as it is paramount that we work together as a team and support each other during this difficult & stressful time. Happily, she is also a very active Momma as she too is breastfeeding our preemies.
We also know many, many other people are experiencing financial difficulty and stress during COVID-19. We are all being challenged on many levels mentally, physically & financially. Many people have lost their jobs or businesses, many have aging parents, many have parents and grandparents in care facilities, many with already sick family or compromised immune systems, and many who have just had new born babies join this crazy world that family and grandparents can’t even see. There are multitudes of things going on that we can’t even list here.
That is why we are cautiously asking our friends, friends’ of friends, community and loved ones for any support they may be able to send our way to help us cover the cost of living away from home for these next 12 - 13 weeks. Some are doing so much for us already behind the scenes and we want to thank you so much for that – our hearts are overflowing.
If you are in a position to help us, you will have
4 beating hearts full of gratitude sending you so much thanks and love.
From our preemie miracle babies and our new-mom overjoyed hearts to yours:
thank you, thank you, thank you!
Stay Well, Stay Safe & Stay Home,
Lauren, Tracy, Sawyer & Elsie Bathory
And our big fur baby Marvin Bear
