Not One More Homeless Veteran

This is Charlie Phillips.
Charlie is a veteran of the US Navy and served in Viet Nam. He served on the USS Gurke (DD-783) which was a Gearing class destroyer that was commissioned during the waning days of World War II and served as a fighting ship until 1976. While serving aboard the ship as a boatswain's mate, the Gurke covered the landings in Da Nang, recovered Viet Namese survivors from the contact in the Gulf of Tonkin and shelled Viet Cong positions on the Mekong and Saigon Rivers.  The men who served on these small ships were called Tin Can Sailors,  and the men that manned these ships readily sailed into harm's way protecting larger ships and taking the war to the enemy in a way the larger ships couldn't. And hence the name of our team. He served his country with honor and was discharged from the US Navy on 23rd of July, 1968. According to his discharge papers he served for a total of one year, nine months and twenty-two days at sea.
And now he needs help. Charlie was born in Eugene, Oregon. He lived in Monroe with his family until he enlisted in the Navy and when he got back, he never left. He has spent the last 44 years in our town. Why is this important? Because he is being priced out of the small apartment he lives in. He lives on less than $900 a month. His sole remaining family member, a brother, died some years back. He never married, has no children and is alone. He's being evicted out of his apartment because the person who owns the building is going to renovate the apartments and when they're ready to lease it again the rent will be...$900.
What we want to do is raise $6000 for Charlie so we can buy a small travel trailer that he can live in at the RV park located in town. You might ask why we don't try to get Charlie into a veteran's home. The answer is twofold. First, it takes months to get someone into a veteran's home, months we don't have. Second, and we believe this, taking Charlie out of the only community he has ever known outside of the close-knit community of a destroyer, would kill him. We don't think that's an exaggeration. Charlie is a fixture around town. He walks up and down the streets, greeting everyone meets with his gap-toothed grin and his unfailing cheerfulness. He knows every family and every kid in town. He has a kind word for everyone he meets and has never complained about the straits he finds himself in. It's just not in his nature. And that walking about is not easy. He recently had both knees replaced thanks to the VA.
Who are we? We are VFW Post 3957 of Monroe, Oregon. Charlie is one of ours. Charlie is exactly what our organization is about. Charlie has been a Life Member for longer than anyone can remember, he volunteers to sell poppies, plant flags on graves, and is ready for any task that the post usually covers down on even though his mobility isn't what it used to be. Charlie embodies all that we should care about and all that we should honor and cherish. And now it is up to us to repay his loyalty and service.
Help us get Charlie a place to live. You might ask, "Fine. We get him a trailer. How is he going to pay the rent, pay the utilities, pay for his food?" Our answer is that we will take care of that. VFW Post 3957 will ensure that Charlie has everything he needs to live a life with dignity, with peace, and with honor.
Help us get Charlie a place to live. We will shoulder the burden from there.
Thank you for your attention.
