This past October, my friend Miri and her family endured the devastating experience of having their family home in Ann Arbor, MI burn down. Luckily, all the family members (Yumi, 53; Harold, 53; Miri, 23; John, 21; Matthew, 17; Luke, 14; Jin, 83; Joung, 79) are safe and everyone who was home was able to get out in time. However, this was a multigenerational household where the kids, parents, and grandparents all lived together. Most of their belongings, including cars, clothes, intergenerational family items (Korean art and furniture), instruments, and other valuables, were lost. Luckily insurance will cover some of the damages, but nowhere near the entire amount needed to rebuild the house and replace lost possessions. Furthermore, it will take some time for insurance to pay out, so the Kim family has been, thus far, paying out of pocket to cover their living expenses as well as having their efforts stretched thin fixing their home while still having children in school and running their restaurant in Canton, MI.
While we are extremely grateful that no one in the family was physically harmed, we ask you to please consider contributing to help give them some financial stability and to cover some of the immediate expenses like food, shelter, school expenses, and part of the cost to replace lost valuables. The process of rebuilding their home and replacing their belongings will be long and winding, so I urge friends, family, and anyone who can offer whatever amount they are able, to support the Kim family through the aftermath of this devastating event.
Thank you all so much!
