Volunteering at a school in Zanzibar

Hello, my name is Oskar Easterbrook and I am a 14 year old boy who has the chance to go with my school and African Adventures to volunteer at a small school in Zanzibar in July 2025.

I will take part in teaching the children and other tasks helping within the school, for example building a part of the school and teaching the kids in sports lessons.

This is an incredible opportunity for me to be able to help these children and do something really valuable.

To raise the sponsorship money to be able to go volunteering in Zanzibar, I will be challenging myself to the extreme over the next few months and completing several hikes throughout the southwest.

As well as other training and challenging walks over the winter, some with nights spent out on the moors winter wild camping, I will be working up to competing in the Ten Tors 45 mile 2-day hike challenge in May 2025.

I will be pushing my stamina, physical fitness and mental fitness with these challenges in order to raise the money for this amazing initiative.

The way African Adventures works is that teenagers like me raise the sponsorship money to go and dedicate a week of our time to developing and building the schools there. The schools see regular volunteers (it’s been running in Zanzibar for 10 years) who complete practical building and decorating tasks as well as opportunities to coach the school children and teach English.

African Adventures recent update: “We have had an amazing summer with another fantastic summer programme where so much work has been carried out at our partner schools in Ghana, Kenya and Zanzibar. So much has been achieved: the construction of libraries, the renovation of classrooms, the installation of piped water and toilets, and the completion of permanent classrooms, to name just a few things”.

The children in the 2024 summer programme in Zanibar have helped make safe the nursery and student classrooms, renovating, tiling, painting and laying a concrete courtyard. More info here: Zanzibar Summer Programme 2024
