We are a group of students enrolled in the Student Design and Construction Program at the University of South Australia which is a hands-on program focussed on capacity building development projects for remote communities. For the first time ever, we have taken our program internationally and are currently involved with the community of Port Resolution, Tanna Island, Vanuatu.
The Port Resolution Project involves the design and construction of bungalow tourist accommodation to provide the community with an opportunity to generate income for children's secondary school education. The area in which Port Resolution is situated has a high amount of tourism, which the community will then be able to harness to set up a trust fund for the education of their children. Our secondary aim is to establish a community based business model which might also be used in other communities to preserve traditional land ownership and culture.
There have been three University student trips to Port Resolution: the first in 2012 to survey the land and develop a design proposal, the second, in 2013, to set out the locations for the bungalows and main building and the third in April of this year to set out the solar power, water supply and waste water services.
The fourth group is scheduled to travel in July to commence construction of the project, and we need to raise the funds to install the below ground plumbing and electrical conduits and to pour the slabs for the toilet and shower facilities attached to each of the proposed six bungalows.
Please help us get this project started and help us provide a better future for the children of Port Resolution.
