Annie2Africa: Journey to Teach

Hi Family & Friends,
I hope 2014 has been great for you and your family. I am writing you to share an opportunity that has recently been presented to me, and that I am absolutely thrilled about taking.
During my time at Howard University, I have been exposed to many different people, places, ideas, and realities. As I continue to search for knowledge and truth through my studies, it has occurred to me that there are many opportunities and people to learn from outside of my immediate community. After an application and interview process I was recently accepted to join an organization called One Heart Source. One Heart Source (OHS) works with vulnerable communities in Sub-Saharan Africa to provide hope and social uplift through education. This
summer I will be spending 4 weeks living, teaching, and learning in Cape Town.
Since 2008, OHS has been fighting for educational and social justice for some of the most marginalized individuals in the world. Through educational mentorship programs, OHS volunteers play an integral role in teaching core subjects such as math and literacy to elementary school students while integrating themselves into local communities to help where it is needed most. This year, I have chosen to join the movement that has been started by over 700 international volunteers in hopes of empowering young, vulnerable students through education and human connection. I will be spending my time in South Africa teaching, mentoring, learning, and engaging in critical dialogue with my peers as we strive to provide a better future for today's youth.
Unfortunately this volunteer opportunity does not come without a cost, and I would like to kindly ask for your support and sponsorship. I have met my goal for the cost of the program; however, I must raise $2,600.00 to cover the cost of airfare and other necessities.
I have no doubt that with your help I will reach my goal and gain a lot from this experience! I look forward to sharing it with you!
With love, gratitude and appreciation,
