J Yaniv Case: Sister-Solidarity Fund

This fund will serve in its entirety to assist women traumatized by the British Columbia Human Rights process and individual J. Yaniv.

In the spring of 2018 several women were named in a BC Human Rights complaint for refusing to wax male genitalia. Some of the complaints were dropped because they settled with the complainant, others were dropped by the complainant once the women retained lawyers. In July 2019, the Tribunal commenced taking the remaining women to the stand to defend their rights. They are being represented pro bono by a non-profit public interest law firm, the Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms (http://JCCF.ca). Many of these women are low-income immigrants, working out of their homes to make ends meet. While maintaining their confidentiality, we would like to share their own viewpoints:

- SP from Clayton Heights has explained she had no training in waxing male genitals. She alleged feeling harassed by JY after declining service.

- MDS declined services on safety grounds, she shut down her business after the interchange with JY.

- BH declined on safety and religious grounds. She is a Sikh immigrant who worked out of her own home and had small children with her.

- SG, Punjabi immigrant who also declined services on religious and safety grounds, would drive to clients’ homes and JY’s home was outside her radius of work, she explained she could get lost. She suffers from epilepsy and has had emotional difficulties since the case began.

The complaints and the proceedings have had a heavy toll on all these women, resulting in risk of business closure, financial and emotional hardship... all because they do not want to be compelled by the state to perform a service they are untrained, unequipped and uncomfortable providing. This fund is to help these women get back on their feet, and to provide them the means to get on with their lives.

We are in direct contact with the lawyers of JCCF who have agreed to the fund, and will provide us with the information necessary to disperse the funds to these women. They will also pass along messages of support from all of you.

As of July 30th, we are still looking to get in touch with the women not yet represented by JCCF.  We have had some leads but are still looking.

This fund is for you.

We are looking to collect $5,000 for each woman. As of now our plan is to give $25,000 to the women represented by JCCF (5 out of the 14 women involved), the remaining money will be in a fund for the women who are not represented by the law firm. If you are one of these women, please contact us or the lawyers as soon as you can. Your contacting us will in no way be viewed as an attempt to engage in further legal proceedings.

Any remaining funds still in our possession 6 months after the closing of this campaign will be donated in its entirety to  the https://t.co/mAyMlVsTxK">Vancouver Rape Relief Center

Note that as of the publishing of this campaign JY is requesting the tribunal to increase the demand against the women to $8,000 per woman.
