Logan Jewell DeWitt if the one-year old daughter of Chase & Johnna DeWitt and the sister of four-year-old Asher from Henry County, Kentucky. At about 7 months of age Logan’s parents and pediatrician noticed that Logan was not gaining weight as she should, despite her intake of food remaining the same or better. At the end of September 2017, when Logan was about 8 months old, her parents noticed a nystagmus in her right eye. An MRI was done on October 23, 2017, and on that day Logan’s family was given the news that absolutely rocked them to the core; she had a brain tumor. On October 27, 2017 after going over the MRI, Logan’s family was told that due to the location of the tumor, surgery to remove it would be too risky and that chemo was her only option. After surgery for a biopsy of the tissue was preformed, Logan was given the diagnoses of Pilomyxoid Astrocytoma, as well as Diencephalic Syndrome. On December 14, 2017 Logan began a regiment of two chemo’s (carboplatin and vincristine) once weekly at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital. A little over three months later another MRI revealed that Logan’s tumor was growing and that there was now a fleck of tumor showing in a different part of the brain. It was decided that Logan’s treatment would be changed to a MEK Inhibitor (Trametinib), in hopes that the tumor and the fleck would stop growing. She started the MEK on March 29, 2018 and received her last dose on October 10, 2018 due to the “flecks” continuous growth. After almost a full month without treatment, due to insurance denials, a MRI done on November 8, 2018 revealed that both Logan’s tumors had grown. On November 9, 2018 she started a new oral chemo called Everolimus (Afinitor).
Logan is doing well at this point and his hitting all the normal milestones that a child her age should hit. The only thing she lacks in is weight…but she definitely makes up for that in sass, personality and smiles.
