Our family is going through an incredibly difficult and heartbreaking situation, and we are asking for help bringing my brothers children back home to Canada.
Recently, my brother’s children were taken from Canada to another country without his consent.
Since then, he has been doing everything possible through legal channels to have them returned home.
During this process, a number of devastating things happened all at once:
The family vehicle was taken during the situation and because it had a loan connected to another individual, it could not be reported stolen, this situation severely damaged his credit and has made it impossible for him to access loans or credit to cover the legal costs required to bring his children home.
At the same time, the home he had been living in was left in serious disrepair when the children were taken. Our family stepped in to repair the damage and settle things properly with the landlord to avoid further legal or financial problems.
His bank accounts and savings were also drained during this period, leaving him with very little financial stability while trying to navigate a complicated international legal process.
Since October, our family has already incurred close to $15,000 in court related expenses, including legal fees in Manitoba, legal costs in the other country (including currency exchange differences), and court filing fees.
This does not include the significant costs still to come as the case continues through the legal system.
The stress and constant court proceedings, police reports, and legal statements unfortunately led to him losing his job. He has since found new employment and relocated to be in a better position to rebuild and prepare for the day his children return home.
While this job helps him stay afloat, it does not provide enough income to manage the growing legal costs involved in an international case.
To pursue the return of his children, our family has had to work with lawyers in Manitoba, lawyers in the country where the children are currently located, and now legal representation related to the Hague Convention process, which governs international child return cases.
These legal costs add up very quickly.
Despite our family doing everything we can financially to support him, we are now completely tapped out.
The longer the children remain in another country, the more complicated and expensive it becomes to secure their return.
It is heartbreaking that the process of bringing children home can be so financially overwhelming and emotionally exhausting.
It often feels like we are constantly trying to “figure things out,” but we have reached a point where we simply cannot do it alone anymore. Life without the children is not a life at all. We just want them home safely.
Anyone who knows our family knows how incredibly close we are. Having these children so far away has been absolutely devastating for all of us. We miss them more than words can express.
We are asking for help covering the ongoing legal costs required to continue pursuing their return through the proper legal channels. Every donation, no matter the size, helps move us one step closer to bringing them home.
Through everything we have faced so far, important progress has been made and a strong legal foundation is in place. We are continuing forward with hope that the children can be reunited with family as soon as possible.
If you are unable to donate, simply sharing this page would mean the world to us.
All funds raised will be received and managed by a designated family member who will ensure they are used directly for legal fees and case related expenses.
Thank you for supporting our family during this incredibly difficult time.
