The Outlaws Project is launching this emergency relief fund to support trans women and sex workers impacted by the coronavirus outbreak with a focus on the Southwest. We will not hesitate to support trans women outside the Southwest who are also in urgent need.
We have been inspired by other fundraising efforts recognizing that sex workers are facing unique challenges with the pandemic. The recent COVID disaster relief funds specifically excluded any businesses that engage in "adult entertainment" - this includes legal forms of sex work like stripping, webcamming, or pornography.
The Sex Workers that we have worked with and spoken to have told us about how they have seen a sudden loss of clients as this crisis affects the economy. Many are very concerned about the spread of COVID-19 and how it may affect their work environments. We are asking for you help to raise funds to meet the emergency health, safety, and basic needs of sex workers and trans women in the Southwest and throughout the United States.
The Outlaws Project works constantly to have sex work recognized as a legitimate form of work, we have worked closely with the US Human Rights Network, we have testified at the US Universal Periodic Review to highlight the human rights violations experienced by sex workers in the United States. Recommendation 86 was given to the United States in 2011 which was to reduce the harms faced by sex workers - which they accepted, but have instead chosen to leave sex workers out of the economic stimulus bill - increasing the harms against sex workers.
What will we do with the funds?
As we see shelter in place orders be discussed in this country’s largest cities, we are asking the community to help us raise funds for:
1) Emergency microgrants to be given to trans sex workers - for food, bills, travel assistance, for cleaning, hygiene, sanitation, and other related personal essentials.
2) Motel rooms for homeless, housing insatiable and motel dependant Trans sex workers and sex workers who need to quarantine.
3) Supplies provided to people in care packages by The Outlaws Project that are currently in high demand by community members. This incudes masks, hand sanitizer, safer sex supplies, and gift cards.
Our sex worker community needs our support right now not just as a form of relief for an industry that has no safety net. We hope to help those of us being affected by COVID-19 to reduce the dependence on traveling and seeing clients physically.
The people who typically fall through the cracks within the system are the ones, where the pandemic is further along; who are also being left behind.
The Outlaws Project works directly with some of the highest risk populations for COVID-19 - we greatly appreciate your support in helping those most exposed and most in need of support to keep healthy.
All Donations will receive a personalized postcard and note from our Executive Director Monica Jones.
Donations of $50 and up will receive an Outlaws Project T-Shirt or a Real Famous T-Shirt. If you donate over $50 - please put the size of the t-shirt you would like in the comments section.
