THIS FUNDRAISER IS EXPIRED, LINK FOR 2021 FUNDRAISER COMING SOON.

My name is Taylor Wall.  I’m a senior at East High School in Salt Lake City.  Over the past few years I have helped Fientje Allis, gather food and assemble food boxes for the Navajo Nation.  Fientje has been working with the Navajo Nation since 1998. Due to the pandemic, additional support is needed so I am stepping in to help raise funds.

The Navajo Nation occupies portions of northeastern Arizona, southeastern Utah, and northwestern New Mexico and is roughly the size of West Virginia.  The nation has very limited grocery distribution and significant challenges that limit crop production due to the remote setting, rugged terrain, arid climate, and very limited water or irrigation infrastructure.  For this reason, some of the things we take for granted, like fresh produce, are very difficult to get on the reservation and are considered luxuries.

On September 30th, myself and a group of cyclists will embark on a self- supported, 300+ mile journey from the Salt Lake Valley to Page, Arizona, the closest major city to the Navajo Nation.  A long-distance, self-supported bike ride is similar to building relationships across cultures – both can be challenging but are very rewarding.  The purpose of this journey is to strengthen the connection between the residents of Utah and the residents of the Navajo Nation and to raise funds to support food deliveries to at-risk residents throughout the winter.

Specifically, the funds will be used to purchase, assemble and deliver large food boxes to 100 households of elderly, home-bound and at-risk Navajo Nation residents throughout the winter.  Each food box contains approximately $50 worth of food so we’ll need at least $5,000 to make one delivery. Any additional funds will be applied to additional food deliveries.

These residents live on $200 to $800 per month and often are forced to choose between essentials such as firewood and food.  Some of this income comes from making and selling jewelry, which they have not been able to do during the pandemic.  They live in remote areas which are, at times, inaccessible during winter months and have no electricity or running water.  The food we provide will keep them fed during these periods of isolation.  Pledging any amount of money per mile ridden (or a fixed amount) will help make this possible.  All funds raised will be used to purchase food and supplies to support this effort.
