Who are we?
Cira Center for Behavioral Health (CCBH) is a team of mental health professionals working in the Chicagoland area with a focus on trauma and social justice. After the murder of George Floyd, we realized that despite being a values driven organization with social justice at our core, we weren’t doing nearly enough. This led us to create an action plan to EDUCATE ourselves, TAKE ACTION, and FUNDRAISE for existing Black-led organizations rather than taking up additional space and attention away from people who have been working on these causes long before us.
We chose Black Lives Matter Chicago because their 10 Demands, two of which are Defunding Police and Reinvesting in our Chicago communities, align with our values of focusing on communities and addressing the public health issue of systemic racism. This can be done by reallocating funds for the police department to add MORE resources when we call 911. Just like a firetruck is deployed by 911 dispatchers when something is on fire, and an ambulance is sent when someone is having a heart attack, we can utilize this type of specialized system in so many other instances (e.g. mental health crises, domestic disputes, homelessness, traffic stops, etc.).
Black Lives Matter Chicago has been working tirelessly on these causes long before we came along, and we want to not only support this organization but amplify their voice and their efforts in this fight.
