Update: as of yesterday (Tuesday 9/30/25), Alex was moved from CA to somewhere in AZ. Vivi has not heard from him since yesterday and her attorney has been unable to provide any information. At the time of her last call with him, Alex told her they were moving him to Louisiana and then to Honduras. She has had no updates since and we do not currently know his whereabouts. We do not know if he has his belongings, including his phone.

Last week, my friend and coworker Vivi had her life upended when her husband, Alex Hernandez, was detained by ICE during his annual routine immigration check-in. Alex has been awaiting permanent status since 2010, during which time he’s had a valid work visa and has been an upstanding member of our community. His detainment leaves Vivi now as a solo parent and provider to their children. Their attorney is hard at work trying to keep Alex in California, but this process may take months. Vivi is an extremely hard worker and an amazing mom, but she is now faced with covering all their household expenses and legal fees on her salary alone.
