Help Kristin Schleiter Combat ALS
Donation protected
Kristin is my best friend of over 40 years and on May 15, 2017 was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig's disease in the U.S. or Motor Neurone Disease (MND) overseas. Every year around for her birthday we ask for donations.
ALS is a cruel disease. It has no cure and no effective treatment and an average lifespan from diagnosis of 3-5 years. ALS robs its victims of the ability to walk, dress themselves, talk, swallow, and ultimately breathe, all while leaving their minds intact. We can’t turn the clock back to before ALS entered her life but we can pull together to make Kristin’s path forward as comfortable and fulfilling as possible. Things are constantly changing and providing ongoing care for ALS in the family home requires substantial funding. The disease has taken its toll on Kristin and she currently needs 24 / 7 care and can not be left alone. She has 4 home health aids splitting her care every week.
Before asking for your help, I want you to get a sense of Kristin as a person. In addition to being a loving wife to her husband Quinn and a great friend to me, she is a dedicated mother to two phenomenally resilient young ladies who are now both college students. She is a warm and compassionate individual and in her professional life, as Curator of Outdoor Gardens at the NY Botanical Gardens, she has made the world an exceptionally beautiful place for millions of visitors. Unfortunately her work there will be around a lot longer than Kristin, but that is something that makes her smile and she would love any of you visiting NY to take some time out to enjoy it.
She has a tough side too! Kristin loves football and is an avid New Orleans Saints fan. She's a fighter and relishes a battle such as the time she beat cancer back in 2010. Yes, she’s a breast cancer survivor too; which is why her ALS diagnosis feels doubly tough. So what can you do to help? Kristin and her family face extraordinary medical and incidental expenses as a result of this diagnosis. Estimates for medical costs alone range from $200,000-$300,000/year, most of which encompass the ventilation, feeding tube, and in-home care which are not covered by insurance.
To those of you who haven’t met Kristin then this is a horrible way to be introduced. To those of you who have met her then you are lucky individuals. My message to all of you is that you can make a very real difference to both Kristin and her family, My ask of all of you is to make sure that we do. Please help us maintain Kristin’s dignity and comfort. No-one deserves this sentence…least of all, my friend Kristin.
We are calling on the generosity of family, friends, neighbors and strangers to help.
